life in midnight shadow (side story)

Life in Midnight Shadow

Dmitry was only in third period and all ready his day was bad. He’d fallen asleep in science and now he was here in math waiting for Miss Katie to give his test back as she always does. “Dmitry, Dmitry, are you listening to me?! DMITRY!!” “Wh-what?!” the half asleep Dmitry blinked himself out of his daydream state. “Y-yes miss?” Dmitry asked in such a low scared voice that only one with as keen ears as Miss Katie heard him fully. “Welcome back to class Mr. Kingston.  I see you’ve finally decided to join us! Now I was just asking Lola what the square root of 144” Dmitry sighed under his breath and prepared himself for a lesson of questions, at least this was math Dmitry thought, the one subject that comes sort of easily.  “Miss, please remind me what square root is.” And the lesson progressed with miss Katie determined to keep Dmitry awake forgot about everyone else. Turned out Dmitry had got a 3/10 for this first half of the test but 7/9 in the second part, at least it wasn’t 1’s for both; Dmitry thought remembering how he did that once. It seemed ever since Dmitry discovered he had this odd mark on his arm he could barely focus on anything and it sounded like there was buzzing in his head or ears all the time. Only when he was absolutely alone at home he is good and has none of the sounds. There was one explanation for the sounds but Dmitry didn’t want to believe it was true, how could it be? Magic? In school? How could that be real? Of course it must have been a dream when Dimitry saw an orange type colour thing on his own arm that glowed.

Dmitry was trying to make himself as least noticeable when he left class; he wanted to avoid meeting Quin. Quin was the school bully and seemed to always know what you worst nightmare is and he always throws it into your face. Dmitry had had a bad day to begin with so tried to avoid going down to his locker which this year has become the death hall. It seems all of the people Quin likes to be mean to the most have to go there some time so Quin always hangs out there or goes and picks off a specific person off of his list of people to bully today. Dmitry had no luck and realized that Quin’s lackeys were directing him to Quin’s ‘base’ so obviously Dmitry was in for a major ruffing up.
The last few meters to Quin’s ‘base’ were nerve racking for Dmitry. Quin came out from the shadows and looked at Dmitry with a creepy smile. “Hello Dmitry I’m so glad you could join us! Would you be so kind as to share your food with us? Hmmmmm?” it wasn’t a question it was a request. Most people would resist but Dmitry knew how Quin was and so Dmitry reluctantly handed his bag over. “Crisps, a sandwich and oh! What’s this? A bar of chocolate! How thoughtful of you!” Oh great! That was the chocolate mother hid from father so that I could eat it! Dmitry thought with regret. Suddenly Dmitry felt anger well up inside of him. No today I will have my way and this bully Quin will not do this to me! Dmitry saw a glow out of the corner of his eye and he raised his right arm, He directed it towards Quin. “You stay away from me! And stop bullying me! Or else I’m going to use this on you!” With every last word of the sentence Dmitry would wave his arm threateningly as if he were about to cast a spell. Dmitry knew of his mark and knew it made him do cool stuff and he did practice a little but was afraid to use it properly. “What sort of a light trick is this?” Dmitry could hear the doubt in Quin’s voice and knew he had won. “Trick, Quin? This is no trick, so back off!” Quin nodded and Dmitry ran off smirking. Huh. Quin was a big pussy cat after all. He thought. Dmitry’s happy thoughts were interrupted when he remembered he had to go home soon. Dmitry couldn’t face his father today. He wasn’t mentally prepared for the brutality of his father and his words. His mother had it worse but for Dmitry what his father was like was hell. So many times Dmitry made plans as a kid to run away with his mom, but his mom always said no, making an excuse or the other.

Dmitry endured the rest of the school day with the horrid thoughts of his father. At the end of the day he trudged across the school campus towards the gate with his head down and his hands in his pocket. Dmitry was too busy thinking about what his father was going to do to him when he almost bumped into a man who was standing out-side the gate. “Why hello little man. Is your name by any-chance Dmitry?” Dmitry was stunned. How did this man know him? “Yes.” Dmitry said slowly and doubtfully. “Dmitry, me and my friend over here work with an organization that helps people like you. We have seen you practicing your skills; you seem to be very strong.” Dmitry was yet again stunned he had guessed that the lady standing next to the man was someone’s mother; he also wondered how they knew about his power and how they had seen him. “H-how do you know about it?” “Please, Dmitry we want to be your friend not enemies, ok? So don’t think we are bad, ok? We sort of work with the CIA and have access to all cameras in the city to watch out for people like you and train them so that they don’t hurt anyone.” What he was saying was reasonable. “Now Dmitry we also want you to be happy. Is there anything, I mean anyone that bugs you?” Dmitry nodded. “Who?” “My father.” “Well that’s not nice…. How about we help you with that? Meet us outside that building over there in the evening ok?” “Sure, no problem.”

At home Dmitry couldn’t help think about what the man said; he was thinking about it so much that anything his father did say or try to do to him went through one ear and out the other. Then evening came, Dmitry left the house and went to meet the man and woman. All of the stories of child kidnapping, disappearances, how you shouldn’t trust strangers and all common sense was screaming at Dmitry to leave the building and go home, not to meet with them. But Dmitry was committed and found them. “Hello, Dmitry.” This time it was the lady who spoke. The lady had light brown hair and was wearing a blue and green flower dress; the man was wearing a black and white suit and his black hair was gelled back. “Hello, miss. So what did you want to tell me? And I wanted to ask, what is your organization about?” “Oh no, please don’t call me miss. I’m not your teacher! No, please call me, Caroline and this is Khalid. Now we wanted to ask about your father. How bad is he to you; very? And if you had a choice about whether or not your father would live with you and your mother what would you do? Oh and about our organization: well you know about the 1001 night’s right? Well you see the 30 ‘thieves’ were actually our organization in those days. We kept all of the people we trained in the cave because it was hard to get to and the gold was just a disguise.” “That is so cool! I never thought of it like that! My father is an absolute monster to my mother and I would get him out of our house if I could but I’m not strong enough to fight him and I don’t want anyone to get hurt.” For a moment Caroline’s face hardened and she shot her partner a look. Then she was all smiles again. “Of course we wouldn’t hurt anybody! Now Dmitry with our organization we help train people like you but we also have a branch that helps with problems like these, where we take away the problem. We always ask the child because adults don’t like to admit their problems. So will you help us get rid of your father? And I think we might have to hurt your father…. To make sure, you know, so that he doesn’t come after you and your mom.” “Do you really have to hurt him that much?” “I’m afraid we might….. But this is so that he won’t hurt you or your mother! We must!” “Yes…… Yes I see. But, just not too much ok?”
Dmitry was over joyed with what they had discussed and went home feeling the happiest he had in years; he finally would have a way to get rid of his father and live a normal life with his mom. Through-out the week Dmitry met Caroline and Khalid in the same building and they always discussed how they would get rid of his father with every passing day Dmitry’s hatred for his father grew even more than it was before and he began to think of horrible things happening to his father. One time Khalid asked Dmitry “What if we have to….. Kill your father?  Or what if you had to do it?” “I- I really don’t know I mean he does deserve a death or at least to be away from me and my mom. But maybe not a simple death….. If it came to that…..” Dmitry had drifted out into his thoughts after that. Ever since Khalid had mentioned that the thought; it became more and more appealing, but still Dmitry’s sense of morality stopped him from making plans into reality. Caroline and Khalid would always mention how Dmitry’s father is so mean and is a horrible man reminding Dmitry why he was doing all of this Dmitry was grateful they kept his hopes up..  Then one time Dmitry was agreeing with them “Yes my father is horrible and I think he deserves a terrible fate.” “Then Dmitry we can train you. We can train you to use your huge energy power to kill your father and to get rid of all the mean people that ruin other people’s lives. You could be their savior.” Dmitry smiled at the thought. “Yes, I shall become the savior.” So it had been decided Dmitry would get his father to come with him to the side of the chapel and there at night Dmitry would kill his father.

The trap had been made and Dmitry walked beside his father to the side of the chapel. It was around 10 o’clock at night and it was raining. “What do you want to show me boy?! It’s raining and I am not going to wait around!” Dmitry’s father snapped. “Don’t worry about it father, it’s just ‘round this corner here.” Dmitry said with a cold robotic voice. They turned the corner and there was a grave yard near-by. Dmitry smiled at how lucky his father was. He would die right next to where he would be buried. It was almost comical. “What is this boy?! There’s nothing here!” Dmitry’s father screamed over the rain. It was pouring now. “Oh yes I wanted to show you your death place, my dear father.” Dmitry said the last word with a large sarcastic voice. Dmitry then unleashed his power as he had practiced and rose himself into the air. He pointed his right arm at his father focusing on him and a bright white flare leapt out of his arm and shot out at his father. It looked like lightning. Though Dmitry didn’t notice but the colour of his mark had become darker almost like a blood red colour instead of the bright orange. It still glowed as bright but the colour had changed and so had he. Dmitry floated down to inspect the remains of his father but found nothing but ashes. Dmitry felt some feeling inside of him. It was the feeling of power. He liked it, he liked it a lot.
Moments after the killing of his father Dmitry met-up with Caroline. “So, Dmitry what was it like?” “It was amazing the feeling of power I had, was….” “Yes, we all get that feeling. It is the feeling of triumph when you have defeated a great evil. Dmitry I have someone I want you to meet. This is Jolene she was wondering-““I was wondering if you would like to join our organization. Though it would mean having to leave your mom so that you could help others.” “Yes I would.” “Well then; Welcome to the shades of midnight.”

Epilogue:
There was a knock on Mrs. Kingston’s home. She was anxious because her boy had gone missing. It was a police woman. “Hello is this Mr. and Mrs. Kingston’s home?” “Yes this is; what’s the problem officer?” “It’s about your son, he…. He died last night from a lightning strike.” Mrs. Kingston couldn’t believe her ears how cold her son be dead? “I am terribly sorry ma’am.” The police woman got back into her car and phoned her boss. “So did the boy believe your illusion Caroline? And the parents what do they think?” “The boy believes he killed his father in cold blood and is now willing to kill anyone. He is remarkably strong but trusts us completely. The parents believe he has been killed by a lightning strike.” “A job well done, Caroline.”
